Extraordinary macro-photos of soap bubbles

Gorgeous and intriguing; macro shots of soap bubbles perfectly captured by artist Bogdan Chesaru. And I can't help but agree that the name of his website is also a good description of his work: a kind of magic.

“A Kind of Magic” gallery depicts the natural iridescent colors you see when light catches a clear soap bubble.

Simply put, I photograph light interference on soap film - a physical phenomenon that surrounds our everyday lives and yet it goes largely unnoticed.

As seen through the camera lens, a vibrant scenery of shapes and patterns, swirling and dancing on the edge of time, arouse both the eye and mind with a sensation of spatial elasticity. Driven by a strong minimalist impulse, my work is a venture into this playground of the most faint air currents, molecular forces and gravity’s relentless pull.

Michael Jackson’s Massive Impact (On Google, Facebook, and Yahoo)

via Mashable! by Adam Ostrow on 6/26/09

michael jacksonAs we reported yesterday, in the hours during and after the news of Michael Jackson's cardiac arrest and ensuing death, tweets about the pop icon comprised 30 percent of total volume on Twitter, and that might be a conservative estimate.

Since then, we've learned a lot more about the story's impact on the Web, and we now have some fascinating numbers and charts from Google, Yahoo, and others about how the Michael Jackson news impacted their services.

First, leading widget network Clearspring, which also owns content sharing service AddThis, reports that the Jackson story was actually most shared on Facebook and not Twitter. That's not altogether surprising considering that Facebook's userbase is still much larger, but the more real-time Twitter grabbed the early headlines. Clearspring's chart shows the social media sites where users were sharing the news the most:

Meanwhile, Yahoo writes on its blog that its Yahoo News property set an all-time record for traffic yesterday, registering 16.4 million unique visitors. That beats out election day, where site saw 15.1 million visitors (what this says about our society, we'll leave to the comments).

Google didn't provide any specific numbers regarding search volume, but notes the huge impact it has had on search trends over the past 24 hours. They also provided the following chart, showing the huge volume spike:

Finally, New Media Strategies notes that Jackson's Wikipedia page logged 1.8 million visitors yesterday, compared to its daily average of just 20,000. It also saw a whopping 650 edits as users updated the entry furiously as news broke.

What to make of all these numbers? Simply that Jackson's sudden and shocking death is one of the biggest news stories in recent memory, and will likely continue to dominate online chatter over the next few days.

Mousavi’s Facebook Message: You Are The Media, Report and Keep Hope Alive

via Mashable! by Pete Cashmore on 6/20/09

facebook"Today you are the media, it is your duty to report and keep the hope alive", reads the latest Facebook update from Iranian opposition presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi.

The status update, posted in Farsi and translated both in the Facebook comments and by CNN, reflects a radical shift in the way the media reports current events, with citizens themselves becoming the most prolific source of information on what's happening in Iran:

Facebook Statement Posted Today

The so-called "Twitter revolution" is also proving itself to be far more than that. As we reported earlier, YouTube has also become a source of raw video from the ground, and Mousavi's latest long-form statement wasn't communicated as a release to the press: rather it was posted as a note on the candidate's Facebook page today.

The Facebook post is a direct response to claims by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, that Ahmadinejad received nearly double the number of votes Mousavi garnered. Written originally in Farsi, it was translated in full by the Neo-Resistance blog. Mousavi's message reads:

If the large volume of cheating and vote rigging, which has set fire to the hays of people's anger, is expressed as the evidence of fairness, the republican nature of the state will be killed and in practice, the ideology that Islam and Democracy* are incompatible will be proven.

I continue to strongly believe that the request for annulling the vote and repeating the election is a definite right that has to be considered by impartial and nationally trusted delegation.

Whatever the outcome of these dramatic events, it's clear that a seismic shift is taking place in the way we communicate: genies do not easily return to their bottles.

*The CNN translation uses "Democracy" here, Neo-Resistance uses "Republicanism"

    What Is Freedom Worth?

These are moments in history whose salience it is simply impossible to know as they happen. But today has already demonstrated both the total bankruptcy of the current Iranian regime and the immense bravery, humanity and genius of the Iranian people.

    Bigotry alive for Christian Dalits

The dominant Vanniyars created rules which restricted the movement of the Dalits.

When they visited the parish church they were not allowed to walk on the main street leading to the building. Instead they had to use a side street that led to the church gate.

When Dalits died they were not allowed to be buried in the cemetery. Their burial ground is beyond the village and can only be accessed through a broken path.

The village came up around the parish church, Lady of the Rosary Parish
Centuries ago, as their forefathers faced social and economic deprivation, many low-caste Hindus embraced Christianity.

But in one corner of southern India, their hopes for equality remain unfulfilled hundreds of years on. Called "pariahs", hundreds of Dalit Christians continue to face discrimination - not from Hindus but fellow Christians.

Home to about 3,000 Dalit Christians, mostly farm labourers and migrant workers, the area witnessed violence last year when Dalits demanded equal treatment.

More than 200km (124 miles) from Chennai, the capital of the southern state of Tamil Nadu, is the village of Eraiyur.

They imposed restrictions on Dalits even though they had also converted to Christianity.

There are lots of painted domes in the Vatican Museum.
Can anyone explain why the Vatican Museum has such an extensive collection of Egyptian artifacts?

Angelina Jolie : World's Most Powerful Celebrity

Angelina Jolie: World’s Most Powerful Celebrity

Angelina Jolie has unseated talkshow diva Oprah Winfrey to become the World’s Most Powerful Celebrity, according to Forbes.

Here’s who rounded out the top 10:
    #2 — Oprah Winfrey
    #3 — Madonna
    #4 — Beyonce Knowles
    #5 — Tiger Woods
    #6 — Bruce Springsteen
    #7 — Steven Spielberg
    #8 — Jennifer Aniston
    #9 — Brad Pitt
    #10 — Kobe Bryant

Here’s what the mag had to say about the 33-year-old’s power based on money and fame: “Eclectic actress and gossip-column favorite dethrones media maven Oprah Winfrey atop this year’s Celebrity 100. Jolie has always been able to attract tabloid attention and Oscar nods, but this year, she’s finally figured out a way to make serious money. Her most recent blockbuster, Wanted, proved this mother of six’s sweet spot is action films; the movie earned $340 million at the box office. Up next: Salt, in which Jolie plays a CIA officer accused of being a spy.”

High school girl solves her own medical mystery

This is proof of what I'm used to saying to my friends after some experiences and anecdotes from other friends: "Doctors are like mechanics. Some of them are good, some of them not so good, and sometimes you end up doing all the work."

Eastside Catholic High School senior Jessica Terry studied her own tissue samples as part of her school’s BioMedical course. - Katie Regan, Reporter
Eastside Catholic High School senior Jessica Terry studied her own tissue samples as part of her school’s BioMedical course.

A high school project to study and report on different tissue diseases became a lot more than a quest for a good grade when one student found the answer to a question that had puzzled her doctors for years.
Eastside Catholic High School senior Jessica Terry was diagnosed as a child with an indeterminable case of either Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, but after hours of studying her own tissue samples, she found the answer; a granuloma, or a mass of cells, that signified Crohn's.
"This is something that pathologists had already done for her, had already tested for, and they didn't see it," said Mary Margaret Welch, instructor for Eastside Catholic's BioMedical course. "It's such a remarkable project."
Terry's conclusion came from a histology project, which is the study of tissues, and one of the major focuses of the class

Interacting With Women Can Impair Men’s Cognitive Functioning

An interesting study. A rather sad one also. for males and females alike.

Interacting with women makes men stupid

    Man flirting with redhead

"Some people think having large breasts makes a woman stupid. Actually, it's quite the opposite: A woman having large breasts makes men stupid."-- Rita Rudner

Interacting With Women Can Impair Men’s Cognitive Functioning

The present research tested the prediction that mixed-sex interactions may temporarily impair cognitive functioning. Two studies, in which participants interacted either with a same-sex or opposite-sex other, demonstrated that men’s (but not women’s) cognitive performance declined following a mixed-sex encounter. In line with our theoretical reasoning, this effect occurred more strongly to the extent that the opposite-sex other was perceived as more attractive (Study 1), and to the extent that participants reported higher levels of impression management motivation (Study 2). Implications for the general role of interpersonal processes in cognitive functioning, and some practical implications, are discussed.
