Italian women disappointed by Gaddafi ‘party’

Italian women disappointed by Gaddafi ‘party’: "

ROME, Nov 16 — Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, in Rome for a UN food summit, spent several hours in the company of 200 Italian women recruited by an agency and tried to convert them to Islam, Italian media reported today.

“Seeking 500 attractive girls between 18 and 35 years old, at least 1.70 metres (5 foot, 7 inches) tall, well-dressed but not in mini-skirts or low cut dresses,” read the ad by the Hostessweb agency and quoted in Italy’s Corriere dell Sera newspaper in its story.

Some 200 women showed up at a Rome villa, having been told they would receive €60 (RM306) and “some Libyan gifts.” Among them was an undercover reporter for Italian news agency Ansa, who took photos and described the evening’s proceedings.

Screen siren Lauren Bacall gets lifetime Oscar: "

LOS ANGELES, Nov 17 — Hollywood veterans turned out in force to see Lauren Bacall, grand dame of film noir, receive an honorary Oscar at the motion picture academy’s Governors Awards on Saturday night, away from TV cameras.

Bacall, 85, starred in more than 30 films but never won an Oscar from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, coming closest with a nomination for “The Mirror Has Two Faces”.

The screen siren earned movie immortality with her husky voice, sultry gaze and curt retorts in films like “Dark Passage,” and her 1944 debut opposite Humphrey Bogart in “To Have and Have Not” launched one of the most electric on- and off-screen pairings in cinema history.

China-US spar over currencies ahead of Obama visit

China-US spar over currencies ahead of Obama visit: "

SINGAPORE, Nov 15 — The United States and China sparred over exchange rates at a meeting of Asia Pacific leaders today, pointing to tricky talks ahead for President Barack Obama when he flies to China to address economic tensions.

The discord surfaced at a summit of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) forum in Singapore when a reference to “market-oriented exchange rates” was cut from a communique issued at the end of two days of talks. An Apec delegation official said Washington and Beijing could not agree on the wording.

That underscored strains likely to feature when Obama flies to Shanghai later today following moves by Washington to slap duties on various Chinese-made products and a growing drumbeat of pressure on Beijing to let its yuan currency strengthen. Chinese officials have grown testy about the pressure over the yuan. Chinese banking regulator Liu Mingkang told a forum in Beijing today that ultra-low interest rates in the United States were fuelling speculation in overseas asset markets and threatened the global economic recovery.
